1840s Midlands cooking range
'Midlands' ranges are distinctive for their elegant form and attractive designs on their sham plates. They are often embellished with highly decorative classical motifs in deep releif and and this early example is no exception.
The range features bold decorations of shields and foliage motifs to both the boiler and oven. This particular example was supplied by the Ironmonger and 'J.Wilkinson of Spalding as can be seen by the lettering on the boiler sham.
This range dates from the 1830/40s and so it is not surprising that it bears the mock symmetry that was so popular during the Georgian era. Like many of the houses of the period that had false windows etc to make their frontages symmetrical, this range has a false oven where the boiler is in an effort to do the same. The brass knob on the left hand side therefore has no function other than decoration. This is a great feature that is unique to these earlier designs.
Substantial restoration work has been carried out to bring this range back to working condition and it is now presented for sale in excellent order. Everything is included that is required for it to be installed to working condition once again. Please get in contact if you require installation as we provide a full service.
The boiler is accessed from a hatch in the top plate as is typical of these early ranges. The sheet copper hinges had worn thin so have been replaced with the same and riveted back into the top plate of the range.
The heat plate in the firebox is in excellent order (as is the grate) and a newly cast swinging trivet of a design appropriate to the period is included to finish it off.
Two dampers are present to control the temperature of the oven and boiler independently if required.
The range has of course been finished in traditional 'Black lead' (Graphite) polish to give the authentic patina of the period.
Made to measure traditional wrought iron chimney cranes to accompany this range are available to order at a cost of £350.
Slate hearths and stone surrounds are also available upon enquiry.
All in all this range is fully restored and fit for service whilst retaining the patina of its age.
